Derek Wood Obituary, Death – The passing away of longtime club member Derek Wood on April 8 caused an overwhelming sense of loss to the Portmahomack Golf Club. Derek’s death was unexpected and occurred far too soon. People tend to remember Derek for two things: first, that he was a really powerful hitter off the tee, and second, that he was an extremely competitive player during the whole of his membership at the club. Both of these things are what people remember most about Derek.
People tend to think about this aspect of Derek more than anything else when they try to recall his name. The “Wee Nines,” the Dornoch Firth Trophy, and the Scott Ferguson Greensomes trophy were all competitions that he took part in. In 1998, he and his partner, Hamish Mackay, won the trophy. He was a part of the club as a member. The creative talent that Derek inherited from his mother motivated him to concentrate on making golfing portraits; the clubhouse is now displaying one of Derek’s works.
The woman who gave birth to Derek played golf at the professional level. Everyone at the club will miss Derek tremendously, and our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Evelyn, his mother Diana, his children Lewis and Ayesha, and Graham, his brother. Derek was a wonderful person. Our deepest sympathies go out to each and every one of them. As soon as we get any new information on this incident, the funeral arrangements for Derek will be shared with the public.
