Juan Bayén Obituary, Death – At the age of 88, Juan Bayén, who had been the proprietor of the Pinotxo bar in Barcelona for a considerable amount of time, passed suddenly on Tuesday due to factors attributed to natural causes. Those who were closest to him referred to him as Juanito, and he spent practically all of his life working at the Pinotxo bar at the Boqueria Market in the city. During that time period, he elevated his little stand to the status of one of the most well-known businesses in the city. Just four months ago, in December, he made the statement that he was leaving the bar.
Since then, there have been some interesting occurrences at the bar Pinotxo: at first, it was stated that the well-known Boqueria bar had closed after being sold; then, just a little more than a week later, it reopened. Now, just a little more than a month and a half later, Juanito has said his goodbyes for the very last time. In 1934, the well-known Bayén was born in the Raval area, which is still the location of the market today. Around eighty years ago, he began helping his mother Catalina out behind the bar of the famous bar that sits at the entrance of the market. Bayén is widely recognized as one of the most pivotal figures in the development of the market throughout history.
Catalina first began by producing sandwiches and coffees, but over time, Juanito steered the gastronomic offer toward typical Catalan specialties such as cap i pota stew, chickpeas with botifarra negra sausage, or squid with beans, amongst a great number of other options. Juanito won the City of Barcelona Award for Gastronomy in the year 2015, which was presented to Juanito. Catalina received praise for her accomplishment in this area.
